Interaktivní a participativní metody vizuální reprezentace v antropologii
Jakub Vašíček
Towards interactive and participatory methods of visual representation in anthropology
The goal of this work is to discuss alternatives to the modes of representation in anthropology that focus exclusively on rational understanding and linear storytelling. Using my knowledge from the fields of informatics and data visualization, I provide a review of literature with the aim of interconnecting the fields of visualization and anthropology. First, I discuss the modes and goals of communication used in anthropology, and then I introduce methods and examples which I find suitable for complementing the current ways of representation. Finally, I discuss the implications of these methods for the dynamics between the subjects of research, the authors, and their audience, and for anthropology in general. I conclude that if our representation is to be clearly understood, to induce an experience reflecting the relationships through which it is produced, and to have a transformative potential for the community involved, we need to present complex data in layers, where the perceiver interacts to uncover details, employ multiple media, and involve the community both in the production and in the presentation of the outcome.
