Slovak ethnographic film on a swing
The paper focuses on the history of the development of perspectives on ethnographic film in Slovakia, and analyses its causes and consequences. The starting point is the state of audio-visual production concerning ethnographic issues in the second half of the 20th century, and the establishment of the Etnofilm Čadca film festival, which guided further development of this production. Ethnographer and filmmaker Martin Slivka acted as a bridge connecting the ethnologists and the professional film production. The festival operated under different conditions, and carried different meanings under the socialist regime and in a democratic society. The participation of ethnologists in the preparation and organisation of the festival over the time gradually decreased. The generation of those who founded the festival failed to find a passionate young generation of ethnologists and anthropologists to pass the baton to. The Etnofilm Čadca festival, together with the ethnographic film in Slovakia as such, has endured several periods of crisis. This connection contains both boosting and impeding elements. The study briefly presents the audio-visual work of ethnologists as well as the position of visual anthropology in the academic environment.
