The skeptic’s point of view

The skeptic’s point of view

This paper reflects texts published in this issue of the journal, and poses the question: what is an “ethnographic film”? As a subfield of film practice, ethnographic film is burdened with the role of film as a cultural product: entertainment, possibly a piece of art. In case of documentary – information, journalism, propaganda. The key problem is to define the status of ethnographic film in the fields of cinematography and science, so that it can be institutionalized. To do this institutionalization, it is necessary to create an institutional background and develop a specific theoretical basis, the core of which lies neither in film studies nor in purely anthropological theory, but rather in an interdisciplinary field of cultural studies.
